Publisher’s Preface
The following section consists of a collection of newspaper articles, contemporary with and mentioning Saint Sebastian in some capacity. As publisher, we wanted to include these articles to show the impact the saint had, not only in regards to the church, but society at large. Most of these articles come from The San Francisco Call, the local newspaper at the time and one in which Saint Sebastian himself published articles in, as demonstrated in Miscellaneous Writings, but other publications have been included as well.
We hope these articles provide context to the America in which Saint Sebastian lived and to show how prominent he was in the public sphere in addition to public opinion concerning the Orthodox faith at the time. While several of these articles contain quotes from the saint, as they are written from an outside perspective, they should not be seen as representative of the views of Saint Sebastian or the Church, outside of his quotes. This is most evidently seen in misunderstandings of Orthodox doctrine by the journalists.
This is a digital edition of Beacon from the Bay: The Collected Works of Saint Sebastian Dabovich of Jackson and San Francisco, a several-month-long project to catalogue the out-of-print works of Saint Sebastian Dabovich, the first American-born Orthodox priest.
If you would like to purchase print copies of Beacon from the Bay for a personal or church library or bookstore, you may do so from Amazon. All support is greatly appreciated for this labor of love.
